Frequently Asked Questions
What is PlainLetter?
A tool that reads a confusing letter from a government agency and explains it in plain English — what it means, why you got it, and what (if anything) you need to do.
Is this legal, tax, or medical advice?
No. PlainLetter gives a plain-English explanation for informational purposes only. It is not a substitute for advice from a licensed attorney, tax professional, or other qualified expert. Always confirm anything important directly with the agency or a professional.
Do I need to create an account?
No. Upload your letter, pay if it applies, and your explanation is emailed to you and shown on screen. There's nothing to sign up for and nothing to log into.
Is my letter stored anywhere?
No. Your document is used only to generate your explanation and is not kept afterward. See our Privacy Policy for details.
Which agencies do you support?
Currently: IRS, Social Security (SSA), Medicare, Medicaid, and DMV letters. We're actively adding more — Unemployment is next.
Why don't you support immigration or USCIS letters?
Immigration matters can carry serious legal consequences, and non-attorneys charging for help with them is specifically restricted by law in many states. We'd rather not touch this category at all than get it wrong. If you've received an immigration-related letter, we recommend contacting a BIA-accredited representative or a nonprofit legal aid organization, such as through immigrationlawhelp.org.
How much does it cost?
A flat $4.99 per letter, up to 10 pages. No subscription, no free tier — you only pay once we've confirmed we can actually process your letter.
Why isn't there a free trial?
Instead of a free trial, our homepage shows a real sample letter and its full explanation, so you can see the quality before paying anything.
What if my letter is longer than 10 pages, or isn't something you support?
You won't be charged. We'll let you know before any payment is requested.
What if the photo of my letter is blurry or hard to read?
We'll tell you before you pay, and you can choose to continue anyway or try a clearer photo/scan.
What if I never receive my email?
Check your spam folder first. If it's still missing, contact us at support@myplainletter.com with your receipt and we'll help.
What if I think the explanation got something wrong?
Contact us at support@myplainletter.com. We take accuracy seriously — the tool is built to say "this isn't clearly stated in your letter" rather than guess, but if something looks off, let us know.
Can I get a refund?
Contact us at support@myplainletter.com and we'll review your situation. Because we check your letter before charging you, most issues are caught before payment — but if something still goes wrong, reach out.
Is PlainLetter affiliated with the IRS, SSA, Medicare, Medicaid, or DMV?
No. PlainLetter is an independent, privately operated service and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by any government agency.
Do you support languages other than English?
Yes — your explanation can be generated in Spanish as well as English.
